Cabo vs Punta Cana

Cabo is desert drama — cactus-lined cliffs, non-swimmable Pacific surf, whale watching, and a food scene that matters. Punta Cana is the opposite: wide palm beaches you can actually swim on, cheaper all-inclusive weeks, and basically zero reason to leave the resort. The tradeoff is simple: pay more for variety and scenery, or pay less for sand and simplicity.

Cabo

Cabo gives you the Baja desert meeting the ocean, whales breaching in winter, sport fishing, and San José del Cabo's art galleries and taco shops. Most beaches aren't swimmable, so you're living at the pool or Médano Beach, but the scenery — the Arch, Land's End, the cliffs — makes up for it. It's pricier, and you'll want to leave the resort.

Why you'll love it

  • Dramatic desert coastline with the Arch and Land's End views
  • Winter whale watching and year-round sport fishing
  • Strong food scene in San José del Cabo and downtown Cabo San Lucas
  • Closer flight from the US West Coast via SJD
  • Reliable sunshine November through May

Worth knowing

  • Most beaches are not swimmable — you're limited to pools and a few protected coves
  • Significantly more expensive than Punta Cana for comparable resorts
  • Hurricane risk August through October
  • You need to budget for off-resort meals and activities to get the full experience

Best for: Travelers who want scenery, sport fishing, whale encounters, and a reason to explore beyond the resort pool. West Coast flyers who value short travel time.

Punta Cana

Punta Cana is the all-inclusive factory: wide, swimmable beaches with calm turquoise water, short airport transfers, and resorts engineered to keep you planted in a lounge chair for a week. The excursions are buggy rides and boat trips to Saona Island, but most people never leave. It's cheaper, simpler, and requires zero planning.

Why you'll love it

  • Wide, swimmable palm-lined beaches with calm water
  • Significantly cheaper all-inclusive packages than Cabo
  • Short transfers from PUJ airport — you're at the resort fast
  • Large resort inventory with consistent service standards
  • Easy four-hour flight from the US East Coast

Worth knowing

  • Seasonal sargassum seaweed April through August, sometimes heavy
  • Almost no reason to leave the resort — limited cultural or culinary draw
  • Hurricane season June through November, peaking August to October
  • Excursions are generic: buggies, boats, and Saona Island on repeat

Best for: Travelers who want a cheap, simple beach week with no planning and no reason to move. East Coast flyers prioritizing flight convenience and budget.

Our picks:

The verdict

Pick Punta Cana if your priority is a cheap, swimmable beach week where you never leave the resort. It's the better value, the sand is better, and you don't need to think. Pick Cabo if you're willing to pay more for whales, sport fishing, dramatic desert scenery, and a legitimate food scene — just know you're living at the pool because the ocean isn't swimmable most places. The exception: West Coast travelers who hate long flights should default to Cabo even if they'd prefer Punta Cana's beach, and anyone traveling in winter (January–March) gets Cabo's whales and the best weather window on either coast. Either way

  • Book Cabo November through May for the best weather and whale season; avoid Punta Cana April through August if sargassum bothers you.
  • In Cabo, stay on Médano Beach (Playa Grande, Villa del Palmar) if swimmable water matters, or embrace the Pacific cliffs and plan for pool time.
  • In Punta Cana, Secrets Cap Cana and resorts in Uvero Alto are farther from the main strip, which means quieter beaches and often less sargassum.
  • Budget separately for Cabo excursions and dinners off-resort — the all-inclusive model works differently there.
  • Both destinations peak hurricane risk August through October; travel insurance makes sense if you're booking those months.
