Things to do 3 ways to do it

The Arch (El Arco) & Lover's Beach Boat Tours

The Arch sits where the Pacific slams into the Sea of Cortez, and you can't walk to it — every trip involves a boat. Most visitors do the quick water taxi loop from the marina or Médano Beach: twenty minutes, some photos, maybe a swim at Lover's Beach if the swell cooperates. But you can also fold it into a longer sail, snorkel trip, or sunset cruise if you want more than a drive-by.

The ways to do it — honestly compared.

Way 1

Water taxi from the marina or Médano Beach

This is the straight shot: glass-bottom pangas leave every few minutes, loop past the Arch and the sea lion colony, pause for photos, and drop you at Lover's Beach if you want to swim. You're back in under an hour. It's efficient, cheap, and exactly what most people need.

Why you'll love it

  • Runs all day, no reservation needed
  • Round-trip costs around $15–20 per person
  • You control how long you stay at the beach
  • Glass-bottom boats let you see fish and rays without getting wet

Worth knowing

  • Boats are small and can feel crowded in high season
  • Captains rush the photo stops when it's busy
  • No snorkel gear, no guide, no shade

Best for: Anyone who just wants to see the Arch, swim at Lover's Beach, and get back to their day without spending half of it on a boat

Typical price: $15–20 per person

Way 2

Small-group snorkel and sail trip

These trips fold the Arch into a longer outing — you sail or motor along the coast, snorkel at Pelican Rock or Santa Maria, cruise past Land's End, and usually get lunch, drinks, and a steadier boat than the water taxis. It's half-day minimum, and the crews handle everything.

Why you'll love it

  • Snorkel gear, guides, and food included
  • Catamarans and trimarans are stable and comfortable
  • You see more than just the Arch — reefs, sea lions, sometimes rays
  • Crews are experienced and reviews are consistently strong

Worth knowing

  • Takes 3–4 hours, so it's a bigger time commitment
  • Costs $75–90 per person
  • You're on the boat's schedule, not yours

Best for: Anyone who wants the Arch plus snorkeling and doesn't mind spending the morning on the water with a group

Typical price: $75–90 per person

Way 3

Private charter with a flexible route

You rent the boat and the captain, then decide the route — Arch loop, snorkeling, fishing, sunset timing, whatever. It's the only way to avoid other tourists entirely and control the pace, but you're paying for the whole boat whether you fill it or not.

Why you'll love it

  • Complete control over timing and stops
  • No strangers on board
  • Captains adjust for weather and your interests
  • Works for families or small groups who want privacy

Worth knowing

  • Costs $150+ per person depending on group size
  • You need to coordinate the details upfront
  • Overkill if you just want a quick Arch visit

Best for: Small groups or families who want a custom itinerary and are willing to pay for privacy and flexibility

Typical price: $150+ per person

Before you go

  • Water taxis leave from the marina and Médano Beach all day — no need to book ahead unless you're going in a private boat.
  • Lover's Beach has no facilities, no shade, and no lifeguard. Bring water, sunscreen, and cash for the return taxi.
  • Morning is calmer on the Pacific side; afternoons can get choppy, especially November through March.
  • If you're snorkeling, ask which site the boat visits — Pelican Rock is right by the Arch, Santa Maria is farther but clearer.
  • Sunset sails skip the midday crowds, but you won't see much underwater — pick based on whether you care more about snorkeling or light.
  • Most operators include gear and drinks, but confirm what's covered when you book — some charge extra for wetsuits or premium alcohol.
