Cabo for Solo Travelers
Los Cabos is genuinely workable solo — Mexico-safe, walkable in the right neighborhoods, and built on group tours where you'll blend in without effort. San José del Cabo's historic center is your base: boutique hotels without single supplements, Thursday Art Walk, and a walkable grid of taco shops and mezcal bars. Cabo San Lucas' marina is social but touristy; the Tourist Corridor is all-inclusive couples territory. Your week is snorkel boats, a Todos Santos surf lesson, a Cabo Pulmo dive day, and taco tours — all places where solo travelers disappear into the group and pay the same price as pairs.
Where to base yourself
The areas that fit.
San José del Cabo
The historic center is walkable, independent-traveler friendly, and full of guesthouses that don't charge double-occupancy penalties. Thursday Art Walk, taco stands on every block, and a plaza you can sit in without feeling like the only person alone. This is your base.
Todos Santos
The Pacific pueblo an hour north — galleries, surf lessons at Cerritos, Hotel California, and a vibe that rewards solo exploration. Day trip or overnight, it's the Cabo antidote: walkable, indie, and cheaper.
Cabo San Lucas
The marina is social — sunset cruises, snorkel boats, taco crawls — and you'll blend into groups easily. But it's touristy, and walking alone at night past the main strip gets sketchy. Use it for tours, not lodging.

Not for this trip.
Tourist Corridor all-inclusive resorts
Most charge single supplements — sometimes 50% more — and you'll be the only solo at a couples-heavy pool. San José guesthouses cost half as much and don't penalize you for traveling alone.
Unlicensed taxis and airport timeshare pitches
The SJD airport exit is a timeshare gauntlet, and unlicensed taxis will quote triple the fair price. Book your airport transfer in advance with All Ways Cabo or Eliker — you'll pay $80–100 flat and skip the hustle.
Walking dark stretches of the Corridor highway at night
There are no sidewalks, no streetlights, and traffic doesn't slow. If you're staying on the Corridor, Uber or a resort shuttle is non-negotiable after sunset.
Private yacht charters
You're paying $1,200–2,000 for a boat built for eight. Join a sunset catamaran or a snorkel group tour instead — same stops, same open bar, $100–150, and you'll meet people.
The money part
San José guesthouses run $80–150/night without single penalties; Cabo San Lucas boutique hotels start at $120. Group snorkel and whale tours cost $80–120; a Cabo Pulmo dive day is $180–220 all-in. Taco tours and mezcal tastings run $60–90. The money sinks are airport taxis if you don't pre-book ($150 vs. $80), Corridor all-inclusives that charge double, and private boats you don't need. A week in San José with group tours, good tacos, and a Todos Santos surf day runs $1,200–1,800 including lodging — half what the Corridor charges couples.
Before you book
- Book airport transfers before you land — All Ways Cabo or Eliker, $80–100 flat to San José. Walk past the timeshare gauntlet without eye contact.
- Stay in San José's historic center (Zona Centro), not the hotel zone or the Corridor. Walk to Thursday Art Walk, taco stands, and the plaza.
- Join group snorkel tours (High Tide, Blue Sky Cabo) — you'll pay the same as couples, meet people on the boat, and hit Santa María and Chileno in one trip.
- Rent a car for a Todos Santos day ($40–60/day) or join a tour ($80–100). The pueblo is walkable once you're there; Cerritos surf lessons run $60–80.
- Book whale tours (Dec–April) or Cabo Pulmo trips a week ahead in high season. Morning departures are calmer if you get seasick.
- Avoid Cabo San Lucas lodging unless you want the marina nightlife. San José is cheaper, safer to walk at night, and has better food.
- Use Uber in Cabo San Lucas and the Corridor after dark — street taxis will overcharge, and walking the highway is dangerous.
