Cabo in May
Cabo in May: 86°F highs, 65°F lows, almost none · spring break is over, summer hasn't started, and you're in the shoulder-season window: fewer families, easier beach-chair claims at medano, and hotel rates drop to mid-tier pricing. Crowds, hotel prices, when to book, and what's worth doing.
May is one of Cabo's smartest months: dry, sunny, highs around 86°F, and the low humidity you'd hope for. Crowds thin after spring break, hotel prices drop to the shoulder-season sweet spot, and the Sea of Cortez is calm and clear—perfect for snorkeling and fishing. Cinco de Mayo adds a festive pulse, and the spring fishing tournaments draw anglers chasing early marlin. Hurricane season technically opens mid-May, but early storms are rare; this is still firmly dry-season Cabo.

Crowds & prices
Spring break is over, summer hasn't started, and you're in the shoulder-season window: fewer families, easier beach-chair claims at Medano, and hotel rates drop to mid-tier pricing. Restaurants take walk-ins again, and you'll find package deals that were impossible in March. Still, it's not dead—anglers and couples chasing value keep it lively—but the pressure is off.
When to book
Book flights and hotels 1–2 months out for decent rates; May doesn't command the 3–6 month lead time of high season. If you're flying direct from the US or Canada on a weekend, book sooner—seats fill—but midweek flights often have last-minute availability.
Our getting-there guide covers flights to Cabo plus a cheapest-fare-by-month table to sanity-check May flight prices.
What to do
What May is made for.
On the calendar
- Cinco de Mayo
- Spring fishing tournaments
Pack for May
- Reef-safe sunscreen—sun is strong, humidity is low, you'll burn fast
- Wide-brim hat and sunglasses for desert glare
- Light layers for 65°F evenings—desert nights still cool down
- Snorkel gear if you own it—Chileno and Santa María are worth repeat visits
- Fishing-shirt UPF if you're booking a charter
Know before you go
- Book snorkel and fishing charters the week before—May isn't slammed, so you have flexibility without losing spots
- Medano Beach chairs are easy to claim by 9 a.m.—no need to sprint at sunrise like in March
- Rent a car and drive the Corridor or to Todos Santos—traffic is light and you'll skip tour-bus schedules
- Ask your hotel about shoulder-season packages—many bundle spa credits or fishing discounts in May
- Hurricane insurance is cheap this early in the season; buy it anyway once mid-May hits, even though early storms are rare
- Pesos get better prices at taquerías and local spots—May's lower tourist count means vendors care more about repeat locals
- If you're booking a private boat or yacht, negotiate—May captains have open calendars and will deal
